2016 Kinesiology Graduation Reception

The Rice University Kinesiology Department celebrated our 45 graduating seniors across our two programs (Health Sciences and Sports Medicine) at a special reception held in Brochstein Pavilion on Friday, May 13, 2016.  Those in attendance included the graduates, their parents, the faculty and staff of the Kinesiology Department, and members of the Dean’s office of Natural Sciences.

We celebrated another successful academic year that ended with a total of 203 majors between our two programs.  We are proud that our department continues to grow, and wish our graduates continued success!

JessicaSierraDuring the reception we recognized our two Hermance Award winners: Sierra Butler (Health Sciences) and Jessica Sheu (Sports Medicine).  Both students have not only excelled in our programs but have also shined among their peers here at Rice University.

Sierra Butler majored in Health Sciences, and she served as the Chief Officer and Editor in Chief of the “Health Grad”.  She was on the Dean’s List in Fall 2013 and Fall 2015, and won the PAIR Volunteer Award in 2013.  She designed a multi-media campaign targeting patient engagement and surgeon-patient communication before and after surgery.  Sierra also served as a Jones Academic Fellow and was a member of the Rice Pre-medical Society.  She plans to take a year off after moving to Ohio.

Jessica Sheu, who served as an active member of Rice EMS, was a double major in Sports Medicine and Biochemistry.  This semester, her research team's abstract for the emergency medicine clinical research project was accepted for publication in "Academic Emergency Medicine", the official journal for the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM).  She presented her research at the annual SAEM Conference on the morning of May 13 before our reception.  She also was awarded Distinction in Research and Creative Works.  She plans to obtain a Paramedic license before attending medical school.

We also recognized Sports Medicine graduating senior Belle MacFarlane, who was awarded as the Texas Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine’s Major of the Year Award in March.

We are so proud of our outstanding graduates and wish them all luck with all future endeavors!  Congrats 2016 graduates!
