Hally Beth Poindexter, Ed.D.

PoindexterHally Beth Walker Poindexter, Ed.D. was Professor Emeritus and former chair of the Kinesiology Department at Rice University. Her professional service spanned fifty years. She authored or co-authored four books, several book chapters and over fifty professional articles.

HalloffameHallyIn conjunction with Dr. Eva Lee, she worked to establish women's intercollegiate athletics at Rice. The 1947 Rice graduate spent nearly 20 years as the Chair of the Department of Kinesiology.  During her tenure, she managed club sports -- now intramurals -- and maintained the care and use of the gym and facilities.  In an era with few opportunities for women to compete on the intercollegiate or even intramural level, Dr. Poindexter volunteered her time organizing and coaching the first women's sports teams.  For her efforts, Rice's most outstanding volleyball player receives the Hally Beth Poindexter Award each season.

Dr. Poindexter was the 2012 recipient of the TAHPERD Pathfinder Award for excellence and leadership in her field.  She also was a 2015 Rice Athletics Hall of Fame Honoree with the Honorary R Award.  Congrats to Dr. Poindexter!

Sadly, Dr. Poindexter passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2016.  She will be greatly missed by the Rice community.  Her obituary can be found here
