Leah Mikesky, Sports Medicine

Leah MLeah Mikesky ’17 is a Kinesiology major with a concentration in Sports Medicine. Throughout her undergraduate tenure, Leah has had the opportunity to play on the volleyball team here at Rice, while being involved in community service and shadowing in the medical center.

As a member of the volleyball team, Leah has had the opportunity to play a collegiate sport at the highest level while gaining a first-class education. Leah has been named the Scholar Athlete and MVP of the volleyball team for the past two years, and this year, she had the highest GPA of all volleyball players in Conference USA en route to being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-American team.

Over spring break last year, Leah went on a mission trip to Romania with Rice FCA. On this trip, the mission team worked alongside Livada orphan care and taught physical education classes, hosted after-school programs, and volunteered in a Baby Hospital catering to the nearly 500,000 abandoned or orphaned children in Romania. Much of this trip focused on simply showing love and compassion to these children, while providing them with basic necessities. Leah also volunteers at various organizations around Houston, including Habitat for Humanity, the Houston Food Bank, K9 Angels Dog Rescue, and the Houston Marathon.

During her time at Rice, Leah has been able to shadow multiple doctors in the medical center and has spent significant time both in the operating room and the clinic. These unique experiences have served to inspire and motivate her to achieve her dreams of becoming a physician.

After graduating from Rice, Leah plans to attend medical school. She is especially interested in orthopedic surgery, general surgery, and anything pertaining to sports medicine.

Keep up the good work, Leah!
