Heidi Y. Perkins, Ph.D.

Heidi

Heidi Perkins brings a wealth of experience to the Rice University Kinesiology Department.  Dr. Perkins graduated from Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Leisure Services.  She continued her education with a Master of Education degree with a focus in physical education from the University of Houston.  She has applied experience working as a program director with the Houston  area YMCA and worked in health promotion with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas.

She began teaching in the Health and Physical Education Department at the Houston Community College’s Central Campus and then as a faculty member in Health and Physical Education Department with the San Jacinto College District.  During this time she continued her studies at the University of Houston and earned her Doctorate of Philosophy in Kinesiology with a focus in exercise and sport psychology. 

Dr. Perkins completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Behavioral Science at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Center where her research activities focused on physical activity behavior among cancer patients.  She served as an intervention specialist in studies focused on exercise adoption and healthy eating in cancer patients.

Dr. Perkins joined the Rice faculty in 2008.  She currently serves as a lecturer in the Health Sciences program teaching Theories of Health Behavior, Planning Health Education and Health Promotion Programs and Principles of Public and Community Health.  Her research interests focus on understanding exercise adoption and maintenance process among women and minority populations.   Dr. Perkins also teaches the Psychological Aspects of Sport and Exercise course, and helps individuals with mental skills training to improve their exercise or sport experience and performance. 

Dr. Perkins served as the Interim Chair of the Kinesiology Department for the 2016 Fall semester and will serve again in the 2017 Fall semester.
