Augusto X. Rodriguez, Ph.D.

AugustoRodriguez2Dr. Augusto X. Rodriguez has been a lecturer in the Department of Kinesiology at Rice University since 2010.  He teaches in the area of health sciences and sports medicine. He is currently teaching introduction to health and wellness, disparities in health in America, statistics for the health professional, and research methods.  His research interest is in obesity prevention, physical activity and fitness in minority children.     

During the course of the graduate school Dr. Rodriguez had the opportunity to work as a research assistant at the MD Anderson Cancer (Department of Behavioral Sciences), research coordinator at the University of Houston (Children Activity Project).  He also worked for the public school system in the greater Houston area as physical education teacher.  Before coming to Rice, Dr. Rodriguez worked for the Baylor College of Medicine (Children Nutrition Research Center) as a Senior Physiologist in a $38 million grant funded by National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and The National Institute of Health.  Among his duties he was in charge of the monitoring the physical education portion of the grant in the Houston area.  Training teachers to improved their teaching skills and improved the quantity of moderate to vigorous physical activity minutes of the participating students. 

Dr. Rodriguez has 5 publications and 20 presentations.  His recent accomplishments include an award from the NHLBI/PRIDE (Program to Increase Diversity Among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research- "Investing in America's Future: Mentoring Researchers in Latino Health Disparities"), and Texas Association of Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance; Poster Session Graduate Student Research Award, December 2004. 

Dr. Rodriguez is certified through the Texas Teacher Certification as a Physical Education Teacher at all levels in the State of Texas.  He is also a National Volleyball Referee.
