Jason Shyu, Health Sciences

Jason ShyuMy name is Jason Shyu and I am a senior from Martel majoring in Kinesiology with a concentration in Health Sciences. In addition, I am also pursuing a minor in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. I was recently selected as a Rice-UT Public Health Scholar for the 2016-2017 cohort of the program. As a part of the program, I will be taking graduate-level classes along with my undergraduate classes over the course of my senior year as a head start towards my MPH.

My interest in the health sciences began with a broader interest in the human body. However, after spending a summer internship at the Atlanta VA hospital working on quality improvement with respect to patient care, my interest shifted towards human health and developing programs to optimally deliver care and improve health.

Outside of academics, two hobbies I enjoy in particular are origami and contact juggling. I also serve as the Vice-President for the Rice University Chess Club and the Treasurer for the Rice League of Legends organization. Furthermore, I also play volleyball with the Rice University Club Volleyball team as a more active extracurricular.

After graduation, I plan to complete my MPH at the UT School of Public Health and pursue a career in public health based in the Houston area. Currently, my specific interests lie in the field of Biostatistics and how it can be used to evaluate and improve patient care programs.
