Major: Sports Medicine & Exercise Physiology
Curtis arrived at the study of Sports Medicine and Exercise Physiology through a rather unconventional avenue. He began his tenure at Rice as a student in the George R. Brown School of Engineering with the intent to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. By the spring of 2019, his enthrallment with engineering had faded, and he began to search for a field that more thoroughly energized him. Recognizing his love for service and interpersonal interaction, he set his sights on a career in the health industry and elected to pursue a degree in Sports Medicine and Exercise Physiology: A decision he will never regret.
Today, Curtis is studying remotely from his home state of Massachusetts. In addition to attending his coursework, he has been studying earnestly in preparation for the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam, which he intends to take in the Spring of 2021. Curtis is also excited to serve as treasurer of SARCOMERE (Students at Rice Committed to Optimizing Medical, Exercise, and Rehabilitation Education) – a nascent student club dedicated to educating community members and unifying students interested in the field of sports medicine. Looking to the future, Curtis is investigating different DPT and public health graduate programs.
Outside of academics, Curtis serves as an officer in the Baptist Student Ministry (BSM) and works as a communications consultant for the Center for Academic and Professional Communication (CAPC). In his free time, you can catch him practicing mixed martial arts, hiking, listening to his favorite country artist, or working out at his home gym. Occasionally, he even returns to his engineering ambitions and designs ergogenic products through SolidWorks - a 3D design application. He is thankful for his peers as well as the faculty and staff of the Kinesiology Department for their endless help and support.
