I am a rising senior at Sid Richardson and a defensive linemen on the Rice Football team. During my freshman year at Rice, I was not on the travel squad for Football, but I used the opportunity to get more connected with the campus community. I particularly gravitated toward the black community on campus and joined the Rice African Student Association and the Black Student Association. A goal was to see more athletes connect with the campus community, so I became the committee chair for the Student Association’s Athletics Committee. I also became involved with the Black Male Leadership Initiative as the Athletics Liaison for the 2021-2022 academic year. In my sophomore year, I became a part of the leadership team for the Impact Ministry, which is a student organization dedicated to connecting Black Christians at Rice.
In the spring semester of 2020, I began working with Dr. Amanda Perkins-Ball on a research project that examined the effect of stereotype threat on the experiences of Rice student athletes. This was a very impactful project for me because I was able to present the findings at the Rice University Research Symposium (RURS).
In the summer of 2021, I got the opportunity to be a Civic Owlets site leader where I was able to help incoming students learn about the principles of civic leadership and various social issues in Houston. I also volunteered with The Spring League as a part of the film crew and participated in the Consulting For America Accelerator program.
