Major: Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports Medicine
Jane Hwang is a McMurtry senior majoring in Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports Medicine. Her interest in movement and the human body stems from her love for tennis, and she hopes to work with professional tennis athletes in the future as a physical therapist.
As a freshman, Jane worked with Professor Roberta Anding as a sports nutrition intern to help develop and implement a diabetes prevention program for at-risk Baylor College of Medicine personnel. As an intern, she created a comprehensive informational binder, infographics, and other teaching materials for the program. She also learned to operate the BOD POD, a gold-standard body composition measurement tool, in order to take body composition data for both program participants and Rice Athletics. As a sophomore and junior, Jane worked with Rice’s Sociology department to conduct research on food deserts and unequal food access in Houston.
During her time at Rice, Jane has held multiple teaching assistant positions in the Biosciences, Statistics, and Kinesiology departments. In the Kinesiology department, Jane worked as a teaching assistant for Dr. Kabiri's Human Anatomy Lab, helping students recognize and identify body structures through the use of virtual dissections and prosections.
Outside of academics, Jane regularly volunteers at physical therapy clinics across Houston, such as Quentin Mease Community Hospital and TIRR Memorial Hermann, as well as at the Chevron Houston Marathon every January. She is also active in various student organizations such as Rice Coalition on Hunger and Homelessness, Rice Houston Humane Society, and Rice's club tennis team. In her free time, Jane enjoys playing and watching tennis, binge-watching Netflix shows, playing the violin, and running.
After graduation, Jane will pursue her Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Texas Woman's University in the TMC.
