Major: Kinesiology - Sports Medicine concentration
Minor: Neuroscience
Christine Wang is a senior at Baker College majoring in Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports Medicine and minoring in Neuroscience. Her interest in the human body stemmed from her passion for dance, and from a young age, she was excited to find such close intersections between the science of movement and the artistry of dance.
Currently, she interns at the Orthopedic Biomechanics Research Laboratory in Houston Methodist. One of her research projects includes observing the effects of blood flow restriction on rotator cuff muscle development. This research experience has given her the chance to prescribe rotator cuff exercises to test subjects, interact with them face to face, and track their electromyography data over an extended period of time. In addition, she is currently a Memorial Hermann Community Benefits Corporation ambassador at Rice under the CCL Volunteers program. This position allows her to recruit volunteers to participate in public health fairs provided to underserved Houston families. Volunteering at these fairs has given her a closer look at how nutrition or health literacy varies with socioeconomic factors, a topic she is also focusing on in the Alternative Spring Break trip she is taking in March.
Outside of academics, Christine participates in many student organizations and activities on campus. As a tour guide for elementary/middle school children, she enjoys working with children and encouraging them to pursue higher education. She is a choreographer and dancer for Rice Dance Theater, and she is the secretary of Rice Taiwanese Association. She also currently volunteers with Rice All-Stars, an organization that pairs Rice students with special-needs children or adults to play basketball. In her free time, she enjoys journaling, watching the Bachelor with her friends, and exploring coffee shops.
After graduation, Christine hopes to attend physical therapy school to learn about injury prevention and help people move again to their greatest potential. She also hopes to continue working in community outreach to observe the social determinants of health in America and research how communities can prioritize physical and mental health.
