The Center for Human Performance Internship program takes 2-5 Rice undergraduate students in the Fall and Spring Semesters. For this program, Houston Methodist oversees the day-to-day research activities while the programmed is managed by Rice University. Dr. Agha oversees the internship’s academic side while Dr. Lambert oversees all research activities. Dr. Agha maintains her own internship program outside of the CHP Internship program, for inquiries please reach out to her directly.
To apply, please see below for the list of expectations for all students who are interested in taking part in an internship.
What to expect from the internship
At any given time, there are several projects taking place in the center. The goal of the internship program is to recruit students early in their academic careers and give them experience with analyzing data sets that come out of the lab while introducing them to various exercise physiology research equipment. A semester in the facility will introduce you to various pieces of equipment used in exercise physiology research including but not limited to; metabolic carts, DEXA, BioDex, dynaomometer, fore deck and the Vicon Motion Capture system.
Successful students will be invited to remain in the lab for an additional semester and gain more hands-on experience helping with data collection. Students who are interested can also discuss working on independent projects with potential for publication or poster presentation.
Intern expectations
Research in the center varies from exercise science, biomechanics, engineering and nutrition. While core courses in Kinesiology and other majors will help build your foundation, expect to do a lot of literature reviews during your internship.
Hourly commitments will be made on an individual basis. However, it is suggested that a minimum of 6-hours be committed each week. This commitment is expected to be maintained on top of academic work. Exams, projects and homework are not excuses for missing time in the lab. Please choose a time in your academic career where these commitments can be made.
Timely responses to emails are expected to coordinate with your supervisor. (Responses should be made within the business day.)
Students are expected to be accountable for the work they promise to deliver. Research is a highly collaborative effort, and all individuals are expected to deliver on their promises to ensure timelines are met.
Ideally, students will have successfully completed relevant coursework (statistics, exercise physiology and/or research methods). These classes make for a stronger application, but students who have not taken these classes will still be considered.
CITI Training will be required of all interns selected for the program.
Students who apply must be getting KINE academic credit for the internship.
Applications for the Fall will be due in early July and for the Spring in Early November. The exact deadlines will be posted on the application page ~2 months in advance.
Submit your application via the CHP Internship Interest Form.
